Photo and video sharing

The ability to share photos and video online is a key part of many social media, apps and online services. Images and video may be shared with a limited group of users or may be publicly available for everyone to view, access and download.

What are the benefits?

  • Sharing images and video allows you to connect with people
Photo and video let you share special experiences with family and friends, such as a birthday or holiday.
  • Learn new things and share ideas
You can watch a ‘how to’ video or watch an international expert talk on a particular topic.
  • Stay up to date with news and events
Images and video can powerfully tell a story in a way that words cannot, helping you to stay up to date with the latest news and events.
  • Collaborate with other people
You can work together on a creative project, such as a film, television program or video clip.

What are the risks?

  • Image-based abuse
Even if you are using a private messaging service, someone may share intimate images or video of you without your consent.
  • Exposure to inappropriate content
You could be exposed to images and video you do not want to see or that are violent, sexualised or not age appropriate.
  • Inadvertent disclosure of your location or personal information
Images and video you share online could reveal your location or personal information, such as your address and contact details.
  • Damage to your online reputation
Any images or video you share online can form part of your lasting digital footprint and may be difficult to remove if they have been copied or shared.
