What is Whisper?

Whisper is an anonymous messaging app owned by MediaLab.AI. You can use Whisper to post content publicly on the site, join interest groups and send private messages – all without revealing your identity. You are given a random handle (username) when you join, which is only linked to a device. Whisper aims to be an outlet for people to express thoughts and feelings they would not normally reveal.

Posts on the app are called ‘whispers’ and are created by choosing a photo or video, then adding text over the top. Posts can be given ‘likes’, but there are no friend lists or followers and posts can only be searched by group, popularity, location or time. 

Whisper is free to join and use. It earns money from selling advertising content such as sponsored posts, keyword posts and videos, which it shows to users based on their location. Location tracking is turned on by default, but can be disabled in the settings on your device. Whisper promotes its app on Facebook in which case the content and user profiles may no longer be anonymous.
