What is AllTrails?

AllTrails is an online service that helps people discover and follow outdoor trails for activities like hiking, running, biking and walking. It includes detailed information about each trail such as the length, difficulty level, elevation, user ratings and photos. You can search for trails based on your location or filter by features like pet-friendly, kid-friendly or wheelchair-friendly routes.

You can use the ‘navigate’ feature to track your physical activity in real time using GPS. It shows your location on the map as you move, and records details like distance, speed, pace and time. At the end of your activity, the route and stats are saved to your AllTrails account, where you can view them later.

You can use AllTrails via the app on your phone, or through its website. AllTrails accounts can be set to public or private through the in-app settings. If your account is set to public, other users may be able to see your completed trails, saved maps, lists and other details.

AllTrails has three subscription options: Base (which is free), Plus (which is paid and includes extra features), and Peak (which is also paid and includes all available features). The Base plan allows users to save trails, create lists and navigate to stay on route. Most other features – including safety features like the ability to plan for on-trail conditions, the ability to download offline maps and the ability to print maps for backup – are only available with a paid subscription.

Users can add new trails to AllTrails by submitting them through the website or app for approval. They can also suggest edits to existing trails, such as changes to the trail name or difficulty level. These suggestions are reviewed by the platform’s moderation team, who decide whether to accept or reject them.

Paid users can use the 'live share' safety tool to share their live location on a map with trusted contacts of their choice. While this feature is designed to give users peace of mind during exercise, it could also be misused by someone trying to control and track another person. About The eSafety Guide

The eSafety Guide helps you find out how to protect your personal information and report harmful content on common social media, games, apps and sites. Entries are for information only and are not reviews or endorsements by eSafety. Before choosing to use any online service or platform it’s best to:

  • do your own research to understand the risks and benefits
  • check the age rating and requirements
  • consider privacy
  • check the permissions and other settings
  • check the in-app reporting options.

If you are a parent or carer who is deciding whether a child should be allowed to use an online service or platform, you can also:

  • consider your child's readiness for the types of content and experiences they might encounter
  • help them understand what to do if they need help
  • provide ongoing support and monitoring, for example through regular check-ins with your child
  • agree to some rules about use of each service or platform.
