What is Grok?

Grok is an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot developed by xAI that is integrated into the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and available through apps and a standalone website. Subscribers across the various platforms can access more features. It is designed to answer questions and generate content, such as images and text, and engage in conversations using real-time data from X and the web.

A voice mode, which allows you to talk to Grok in English and initiate conversations by saying ‘Hey Grok’ is also available through the apps. You can choose from various personalities like ‘therapist’, ‘unhinged’ or ‘sexy’ to tailor the AI’s tone and style to your preferences. Real-time subtitles can also accompany spoken responses.

Grok is marketed as a ‘truth-seeking AI companion for unfiltered answers’. Unlike some other AI chatbots, Grok’s moderation appears limited. It is designed for use by adults and teenagers (users aged 13 to 17 must have the consent of a parent or guardian), however, interactions with Grok can be publicly posted on X and there are no content filters for young people, increasing the risk of exposure to content that is not age-appropriate or offensive. It is also important to be aware that AI chatbots may generate content that is inaccurate or harmful.
