Let's go on a journey. Long time ago in the dreaming, stories were formed and told the old way – person to person. These stories have left footprints for generations to follow. |
Young person: Technology is changing the way we share and tell our stories. Texting and using social networking sites have become part of our everyday business. What you say and do online shapes what people think of you now and into the future. |
Elder: It's game on when you're online. So keep your head in the game, and be a team player. You young ones are our future, so take charge, do it right, and look out for each other. Make sure when you go online you play it safe every time. If you play safe, our culture stays strong, and everyone wins. Being deadly online is easy. It's all about the respect circle – respect for yourself, respect for others, and respect for your environment. |
Young person: So what do you mean by respecting yourself? Elder: The information, conversations and photos you post are part of what builds your digital footprint. Once it's online, this stuff doesn't go away. So remember to keep your digital footprint positive by being deadly in everything you do and say. |
Young person: So how do I do that, Unc? Elder: Think about how you speak to others when you go online. It's easy to get the wrong idea about online messages because it's not face-to-face. Sometimes this causes hurt and brings shame to the mob. Communicate and share stories in a positive way. Think twice before posting pics. Ask yourself, would you want your family to see it? Remember, what you post can be easily shared without your commission. |
Young person: And what do you mean by respecting others? Elder: Think about how your actions affect others. Don't get involved in gossip or jealousy. Show respect when sharing pics online. Things like gossiping and filming flights can damage friendships and hurt families. |
Elder: The last thing you need to remember is to respect your environment. Young person: What are you talking about, Unc? How do you respect a tree? Elder: Nah. It's about the environment you live in, your family, the community and our mob everywhere. |
Young person: So what should I do? Elder: Promote positive community stories online. Be a good role model by being deadly in everything you do and say. Don't get involved in any disputes. Think about the safety of family, culture and community when we go online. |
Young person: They're all deadly ideas, but how can I make a difference? Elder: Use positive language. Don't swear or gossip. When you're angry, get offline. Take time to calm down. |
Young person: Hey, maybe I can tell our young mob what's expected from them online. Elder: That's right. You can show strong, proud behaviour online – you know, lead by example. Remember, it's up to all of us to teach our young ones to keep the respect circle close to their hearts and hands. Young person: That way, we respect technology and each other. Hey, Unc? |
