What is OmegleMe!?

OmegleMe! is a website that lets you chat with random strangers via text (typing), audio (talking) or video (using your camera). The website matches you randomly with another person. You can choose to connect with people from anywhere around the world, or choose to limit matches to specific countries.

Before starting, you can type in your interests (for example ‘music’ or ‘movies’). If you select the option ‘common interests only’, the website will try to match you only with people who wrote the same interests. Chats can also happen in different languages.

OmegleMe! states that nudity is not allowed, and says that people who break this rule may be banned. However, the website includes links to another version called ‘NSFW Omegle’ (NSFW means ‘Not Safe For Work’, usually referring to sexual or adult content). It also links to other adult websites.

On the regular OmegleMe! (the version that says nudity is banned), when a chat ends, pop-up messages may appear with links like ‘Dating’, ‘Adult Fun’, ‘AI GF’ and ‘Go Wild!’ Clicking these links may take you to external pornographic or ‘dating’ sites, which may be spam-like or unsafe. OmegleMe! does not check or verify the age of users.

OmegleMe! has a number of settings that can be changed. For example, there is a ‘nudity detector’, that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to try and recognise when a video shows nudity. You can set the sensitivity level as a percentage, such as 0%, 50%, 100%, or anywhere in between. The percentage tells the detector how strict to be – for example, at 0% the detector does nothing, at 50% it may only block very obvious nudity, and at 100% it is set to block all nudity it detects.

When the chat ends, you can either save a copy of the chat as a text file (.txt), or an image file (.png). You can also report a chat either during or after it ends.

Platforms like OmegleMe!, Omegle.life and OmeTV are part of a growing number of imitation sites based on the original Omegle. OmegleMe! state that they are not affiliated with these other sites.

About The eSafety Guide

The eSafety Guide helps you find out how to protect your personal information and report harmful content on common social media, games, apps and sites. Entries are for information only and are not reviews or endorsements by eSafety. Before choosing to use any online service or platform it’s best to:

  • do your own research to understand the risks and benefits
  • check the age rating and requirements
  • consider privacy
  • check the permissions and other settings
  • check the in-app reporting options.

If you are a parent or carer who is deciding whether a child should be allowed to use an online service or platform, you can also:

  • consider your child's readiness for the types of content and experiences they might encounter
  • help them understand what to do if they need help
  • provide ongoing support and monitoring, for example through regular check-ins with your child
  • agree to some rules about use of each service or platform.
