What is Wickr?

Wickr is a private messaging and collaboration service designed for organisations, including businesses and government agencies. In 2021, Wickr was purchased by Amazon and became part of Amazon Web Services (AWS). Wickr’s features include one-to-one and group messaging, audio and video calling, screen sharing and broadcasting, and file sharing and saving. You can also set messages to automatically disappear after a set time or after they’ve been read.

Everything sent on Wickr is protected by end-to-end encryption, which means that only the people involved in the conversation can see or hear what’s shared – no one else can access it, not even Wickr. However, organisations can choose to turn on data retention if they need to keep copies of messages for safety or legal reasons.

Wickr is available on iOS, Android, macOS, Windows and Linux. To use Wickr, your company must be signed up with the service. By default, people in your organisation can message anyone else who uses Wickr, even if they’re not part of your organisation.

Organisations can choose between two versions of Wickr: AWS Wickr and Wickr Enterprise. AWS Wickr is hosted and managed by Amazon, who handle the setup, updates and security – similar to other cloud-based services. Wickr Enterprise on the other hand, is for organisations that want to set it up and manage it themselves, using their own computers and systems. This means they have more control over how it works, but they also have to deal with the technical setup, updates and security. If needed, the two systems can be connected so users on each one can still talk to each other. There is also a version called AWS WickrGov, which is only available in the United States-West region.

Wickr has different plans. There is a free tier, where you can try out AWS Wickr for up to 6 months. After that, organisations will need to move to a paid plan in order to continue using it. These plans cost a set amount per user each month. There are also add-on options for guest users. As for Wickr Enterprise, you must contact Wickr directly to get a quote.

The free Wickr app for individuals (Wickr Me) was discontinued at the end of 2023 as the focus moved to business and government users.

About The eSafety Guide

The eSafety Guide helps you find out how to protect your personal information and report harmful content on common social media, games, apps and sites. Entries are for information only and are not reviews or endorsements by eSafety. Before choosing to use any online service or platform it’s best to:

  • do your own research to understand the risks and benefits
  • check the age rating and requirements
  • consider privacy
  • check the permissions and other settings
  • check the in-app reporting options.

If you are a parent or carer who is deciding whether a child should be allowed to use an online service or platform, you can also:

  • consider your child's readiness for the types of content and experiences they might encounter
  • help them understand what to do if they need help
  • provide ongoing support and monitoring, for example through regular check-ins with your child
  • agree to some rules about use of each service or platform.
