Australia’s eSafety Commissioner will form a new online safety partnership with close Pacific neighbour Fiji, and work together to tackle online harms.
Supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade through its Cyber Cooperation Program, the partnership will kick off with a Commissioner-to-Commissioner conversation about the importance of online safety cooperation between island nations.
“Australia and Fiji share a common commitment to helping our people have safer, more positive experiences online. As two of the first countries in the world to create government agencies exclusively dedicated to online safety, I am excited to be able to partner with the Fijian Online Safety Commission to share challenges and lessons to advance online safety in our region” eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant said.
“The global spotlight is shining on online safety, with governments around the world taking steps to regulate online platforms and keep their citizens safer online."
“While an ocean physically separates us from Silicon Valley, we know the online world is not defined by oceans or borders. International collaboration, spearheaded by governments with a strong commitment to online safety, has the power to shape the digital environment.”
Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts, the Hon Paul Fletcher said the Morrison Government is committed to keeping Australians safe online.
“That is why we established the pioneering eSafety Commissioner in 2015 and we are excited about sharing the knowledge and experience we have gained with the Fiji Online Safety Commission, and working together on regional safety issues,” Minister Fletcher said.
In collaboration with the Fiji Online Safety Commission, the project will utilise best practice to deliver resources and tools to build online safety capabilities.
