How we handle image-based abuse reports
Each report is assessed on a case-by-case basis, taking into account all the information provided before we decide on our approach.
For this reason, it is very important that you provide as much information as you can in your report, such as screenshots and the location where the intimate image has been posted. Find out more about collecting evidence and the kind of information we require.
If we need further information, we will contact you via your nominated contact method (or by the email address you have provided, if more appropriate). As your report progresses, we will keep you informed.
If you are still not sure about making a report or you have questions that have not been answered, see if our frequently asked questions about making a report can help.
What happens after you make a report?
You will receive a report number. If you agree to us sending you a confirmation email, this email will also include the report number, as well as links to information and resources. Over the course of managing the report we will keep you informed about actions and outcomes.
Once we receive your report, we will assess whether the report meets the criteria about who can report, whether we need any more information, and what actions we think are appropriate.
We will contact you if we need any more information and you have indicated in your report that it is OK for us to contact you. You can also contact us at any time to update us or ask a question. Just contact us to and provide your report number.
Your safety, and the safety of others, is our main concern. If we feel an action you requested is unsafe, we will let you know. If we believe other actions may be helpful, we will explain and ask your permission first.
Where we share information with a third party, it will generally be at your request or with your permission. The exception may be where we are concerned for your safety, or the safety of others, or we are required to disclose information by law. More detail about the disclosure of information is in the image-based abuse collection notification.
How long will you take to assess my complaint?
You can expect to hear from us within 48 hours — but in many cases we will be in touch sooner.
When we have completed our assessment of your report, we will notify you of our approach via the email address you supplied. We will also notify you if we decide not to investigate your report.
