What is Midjourney?

Midjourney is a tool that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to create images and videos. You can type in a description of what you want your image to look like and it generates an image based on that description. For example, you can ask for ‘a puppy wearing a red hat’. While Midjourney is primarily a text-to-image generator, it also includes an image-to-video generator – you upload an image (and optionally, some text to guide it), and it will create a short video based on that. Midjourney is a paid subscription service.

Midjourney runs on two main platforms: the Midjourney website and on Discord. Midjourney originally started on Discord and continues to work on the platform as a bot (an automated tool). It can be used in the official Midjourney Discord server, or in your own server if you add the Midjourney bot to it. For example, you can type a command such as ‘/imagine a waterfall with fish’, and the Midjourney bot will read your message, then create the images and send them into the chat. You can then request variations of these images.

Midjourney creations are public by default, which means the images and videos you create can be seen by other people on the Midjourney explore page. This includes images made in private Discord servers or direct messages with the Midjourney bot. It also means that other users can also remix or make variations of your images. There is a setting called ‘Stealth mode’ that keeps your images private, but this requires a Pro or Mega plan.

Midjourney says that gore and adult content, as well as content that sexualises children, is not allowed. It uses moderation systems to try to enforce these rules. This includes Midjourney banning the use of certain words in text prompts.

More experienced users often write prompts in a very detailed way to get more accurate results. For example, they might specify the visual style, colours, and lighting, or even use photography terms such as camera type and lens to create the look of a real photo.

Midjourney may also raise copyright concerns by incorporating content without permission and attribution. For example, images may be generated that closely imitate the style of real artists or artworks.
