What is League of Legends (LoL)?

League of Legends (LoL) is an online, multiplayer game made by Riot Games. It was inspired by Defense of the Ancients (Dota), which is a modification of the game ‘Warcraft III’.

League of Legends is a type of game known as a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA). This means two teams compete against each other on a battlefield, and the goal is to destroy the other team's main structure while defending their own. A typical match lasts about 20 to 40 minutes. Each player controls a character with distinct abilities called a ‘champion’. Some champions focus on fighting, some on defence, and some on helping teammates. Learning how different champions work and how to coordinate with teammates is an important part of the game.

LoL is free to play, with in-game purchases available as a way to gain enhancements.

Players can play both casual games (non-competitive) or ranked matches (competitive). In ranked matches, players are automatically placed into different skill levels and matched with others of a similar ability. Rankings go up or down based on wins and losses.

LoL players can communicate with other players during the game in several ways. This includes text chat with teammates, visual alerts in the game (called pings), private messages between players (called whispers), and ‘emotes’ which are character movements that express emotion. Players can mute chat if they do not want to see these messages. Players can also add other players to their friends list.

The game has featured in numerous eSport tournaments and is popular on social and streaming platforms like Twitch.
