What is Hoop?

Hoop describes itself as a social networking app for making new friends. Some people also use it for dating. You can create a profile and connect with strangers by swiping ‘add friend’, if you are interested, or ‘skip’ to move past their profile. When you match with another user – after you both swipe ‘add friend’ – you can start chatting to them via direct message. Upon signup, you are able to select who you want to meet – women, men or everyone.

Hoop uses an in-app currency called ‘Diamonds’, which are used to access extra features, such as ‘super request’ and ‘reverse swipe’. Diamonds can be purchased with real money, or earned through activities like watching ads and taking surveys. Hoop also offers a paid subscription called ‘Hoop+’, which is ad-free and includes other extra features. As a safety measure, teen and adult profiles are kept separate and cannot be seen by anyone in the other age group. Once an age is chosen on a profile, it cannot be changed. Hoop does not share the specific location information of its users.

About The eSafety Guide

The eSafety Guide helps you find out how to protect your personal information and report harmful content on common social media, games, apps and sites. Entries are for information only and are not reviews, endorsements or assessments against any legislative definition by eSafety. Before choosing to use any online service or platform it’s best to:

  • do your own research to understand the risks and benefits
  • check the age rating and requirements
  • consider privacy
  • check the permissions and other settings
  • check the in-app reporting options.

If you are a parent or carer who is deciding whether a child should be allowed to use an online service or platform, you can also:

  • consider your child's readiness for the types of content and experiences they might encounter
  • help them understand what to do if they need help
  • provide ongoing support and monitoring, for example through regular check-ins with your child
  • agree to some rules about use of each service or platform.
