What is CapCut?

CapCut is a video editor and maker created by the company ByteDance. It lets you edit videos on your phone or computer by trimming clips, adding music, filters, captions, transitions, special effects and more. It also has a range of artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as auto-captioning, script generator, and AI image and video generators. It’s especially popular for creating short videos for social media, and is known for being beginner-friendly.

CapCut can be used with different social media and online platform accounts. For example, users can sign in with TikTok, Facebook, Google, Apple or email. After you have edited a video, you can upload directly to TikTok or other platforms. You can also download the videos straight to your mobile device or computer.

CapCut offers four different subscription tiers: free, standard, pro and teams. Depending on your subscription level, there may be limits to what you can do on the app – such as how many videos you can export each week, the video quality, whether a watermark appears on your videos and more.

The CapCut app also includes a ‘templates’ tab. In this tab, you can scroll through short videos, like you do with TikToks or Instagram reels. Each video is a ‘template’ that you can tap and reuse by dropping your own photos or clips into the same format. Users can only post templates to this feed if they are a part of the Template Creator Program. Users can apply to become template creators.

CapCut claims that this ‘templates’ feed is moderated by both AI and humans, but inappropriate or harmful content may still appear. If you come across content like this, you can report it within the app. Users can follow other creators, receive followers, and like and comment on videos in the templates feed. You can block and report users by going to their profile. While users can interact by commenting on videos, there is no direct messaging feature within the app.

About The eSafety Guide

The eSafety Guide helps you find out how to protect your personal information and report harmful content on common social media, games, apps and sites. Entries are for information only and are not reviews or endorsements by eSafety. Before choosing to use any online service or platform it’s best to:

  • do your own research to understand the risks and benefits
  • check the age rating and requirements
  • consider privacy
  • check the permissions and other settings
  • check the in-app reporting options.

If you are a parent or carer who is deciding whether a child should be allowed to use an online service or platform, you can also:

  • consider your child's readiness for the types of content and experiences they might encounter
  • help them understand what to do if they need help
  • provide ongoing support and monitoring, for example through regular check-ins with your child
  • agree to some rules about use of each service or platform.
