What is Yope?

Yope is an app that lets you share photos privately with small groups of people. There is no public feed – you only see content from the groups you’re part of.

You can add people on Yope by selecting them from your phone contacts, searching their username, or sharing an invite link. Once someone accepts the invite and joins the group, you can start exchanging photos with them.

The app uses iOS lock screen widgets to display photos your friends send you. You don’t need to open the app to see them – the photos appear directly on your lock screen.

You can take a new photo in the app or choose one from your library, then send it to any group you’ve created or joined. You’ll also see photos shared by others in the group, where you can react with emojis and chat together.

You can add stickers, emojis, text, drawings and other effects to your photos, and use the same things to react to photos from others.

Each group also has a wall, where Yope uses machine learning to cut out and combine images from the group into an ongoing collage.

Yope also includes ‘streaks’ – if you and someone else exchange photos back and forth, the app shows a flame emoji to mark your ongoing interaction.

Yope also may send notifications reminding you to update your groups with new photos.

About The eSafety Guide

The eSafety Guide helps you find out how to protect your personal information and report harmful content on common social media, games, apps and sites. Entries are for information only and are not reviews or endorsements by eSafety. Before choosing to use any online service or platform it’s best to:

  • do your own research to understand the risks and benefits
  • check the age rating and requirements
  • consider privacy
  • check the permissions and other settings
  • check the in-app reporting options.

If you are a parent or carer who is deciding whether a child should be allowed to use an online service or platform, you can also:

  • consider your child's readiness for the types of content and experiences they might encounter
  • help them understand what to do if they need help
  • provide ongoing support and monitoring, for example through regular check-ins with your child
  • agree to some rules about use of each service or platform.
