Social Media Minimum Age campaign
The national campaign launched on
19 October 2025.
The campaign ‘For the good of their wellbeing’ raises awareness of the new Social Media Minimum Age law. The new law means that from 10 December, you have to be 16 years or older to have a social media account.
This change is designed to protect young people from the risks of harm from social media and to support their wellbeing.
You can find helpful resources for young people, families and educators in our Social media age restrictions hub.

Why will there be a delay to social media account access for under-16s?
There’s evidence between social media use and harms to the mental health and wellbeing of young people.
While there can be benefits in social media use, the risk of harms may be increased for young people as they do not yet have the skills, experience or understanding to navigate complex social media environments.
To find out details about the social media minimum age changes and the social media platforms it will include, visit the Social media age restrictions hub.
To help parents, carers and under 16s prepare for the change, further campaign material and resources are on this page.
We encourage you to share them with your friends, family, colleagues and networks.
