What is LiveMe?

LiveMe is a live streaming platform which lets you broadcast live video from your mobile device and view the broadcasts of other members. You can view these live and comment in real time, or afterwards if the member has saved the video to their profile. LiveMe videos and broadcasts – yours and other members – can be captured, downloaded and shared on other social media platforms. Live streams can also be viewed on a PC without logging in.

While LiveMe explicitly states that ‘sexually suggestive behaviours and content or activities with sexual innuendo are not allowed’, the majority of streams appear to feature sexually suggestive content. People can engage with live streamers by sending them virtual gifts using LiveMe’s in-app currency, called ‘coins’, which cost real money to buy. Streamers can then exchange these gifts for real money. Many streamers build an audience and earn money through these types of interactions. There is also a one-on-one video chat feature, where users spend coins to have private video chats with live streamers.

LiveMe also has group chat rooms where users can choose to have their video on or off when talking to others.

The beam function allows members to join each other’s live videos. This can be one person or multiple people at once, called a ‘multi-beam’. You can control who beams in, and multi-beam has an audio-only option. You can also join broadcasts with other users by participating in contests and games (for example a ‘head-to-head’ where two users are randomly matched).

About The eSafety Guide

The eSafety Guide helps you find out how to protect your personal information and report harmful content on common social media, games, apps and sites. Entries are for information only and are not reviews, endorsements or assessments against any legislative definition by eSafety. Before choosing to use any online service or platform it’s best to:

  • do your own research to understand the risks and benefits
  • check the age rating and requirements
  • consider privacy
  • check the permissions and other settings
  • check the in-app reporting options.

If you are a parent or carer who is deciding whether a child should be allowed to use an online service or platform, you can also:

  • consider your child's readiness for the types of content and experiences they might encounter
  • help them understand what to do if they need help
  • provide ongoing support and monitoring, for example through regular check-ins with your child
  • agree to some rules about use of each service or platform.

To find out more, you can read the App checklist for parents, as well as information about parental controls in social media, games and apps and mental wellbeing resources for families.
