What is Pure?

Pure is a dating and hookup app. It is aimed at people who are interested in things like casual dating, hookups, ethical non-monogamy (ENM), polyamory, open relationships, and exploring sexual interests.

Setting up a profile involves providing personal details about your appearance, preferences and sexual interests. You can choose to hide your age and your height from your profile.

The app is free to download, but you need a paid subscription to access many of its features.

What you can do on Pure

Find people and match

Features include:

  • Ads – similar to dating profiles on other apps. An ad shows your photos, information about you, and what you are looking for. To see others, and for others to see you, you need to post an ad. Pure uses your location and preferences to decide which ads to show you.
  • Likes and matching – if you and another user like each other, you become a match and can message one another.
  • Turn-ons – you can select turn-ons from a list provided by Pure. These can include sexual, dating and lifestyle interests. You can use the turn-ons filter to find people who have selected the same turn-ons as you.

Chat and call

Features include:

  • Chats – send direct messages, including voice messages. Chats expire automatically 24 hours after you match, unless both people agree to turn off the timer and keep the chat.
  • Video calls – you can video call another user directly from the chat.

Share photos and videos

Features include:

  • Photos and videos – you can send photos and videos in chats. These can be self-destructing photos, which disappear after the person views them. Users can also ask someone they are chatting with to send a ‘true photo’, which is a new photo taken with Pure’s camera.
  • Private albums – save photos in a private album. These photos are only visible to you, unless you choose to share them with people you are chatting with.

Use privacy and safety features

Features include:

  • Safety signal – lets you share your location and your date’s profile with a trusted person while you are meeting your date in person.
  • My media rules – choose how Pure handles photos and videos that may contain sexual content. For example, you can choose to blur or hide these photos in your feed or chats, or block photos and videos in chats until you choose to open them.
  • Photo verification badge – you can do a verification check, where Pure compares a photo you take with your profile photo. If they match, a verification badge should appear on your profile.
  • Screenshot notifications – Pure says that you will receive a notification if someone tries to take a screenshot of a photo, video or chat. Pure states that it is not possible to take screenshots, however, there still may be ways for someone to keep a copy, so consider what feels comfortable to share.

About The eSafety Guide

The eSafety Guide helps you find out how to protect your personal information and report harmful content on common social media, games, apps and sites. Entries are for information only and are not reviews, endorsements or assessments against any legislative definition by eSafety. Before choosing to use any online service or platform it’s best to:

  • do your own research to understand the risks and benefits
  • check the age rating and requirements
  • consider privacy
  • check the permissions and other settings
  • check the in-app reporting options.

If you are a parent or carer who is deciding whether a child should be allowed to use an online service or platform, you can also:

  • consider your child's readiness for the types of content and experiences they might encounter
  • help them understand what to do if they need help
  • provide ongoing support and monitoring, for example through regular check-ins with your child
  • agree to some rules about use of each service or platform.
